American Permalight Inc.'s PERMALIGHT personal safety armbands make use of the photoluminescent effect to protect people in darkness situations. These arm bands provide triple safety with flurescent red stripes are highly visible in daylight, photoluminecent yellow stripe visible in full darkness and reflective red stripes to bounce back light shining on them. While reflective material only works when directly struck by light (from an approaching vehicle, for example), the brightly glowing photoluminescent material is visible from a far away distance, thereby increasing the reaction time of the driver to avoid accidents.
